Why do I need supervision?

⭐ Supervision helps us to best meet the needs of our clients by ensuring that we are providing a safe, effective and high-quality service.

⭐Supervision helps to develop our strengths and overcome our challenges as Speech and Language Therapists so that we can achieve the best results for the people we work with.

Supervision benefits our clients

⭐Supervision helps us to explore where we are heading in our careers and how to achieve our career goals. It helps us to identify and break down any barriers getting in the way of confidence, capability or job satisfaction.

⭐ Supervision promotes wellbeing; for example, by building our confidence, supporting us with challenging workplace relationships, or helping us to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

⭐Ultimately, supervision should be enjoyable and a conversation that you look forward to.

Supervision benefits us as clinicians

Meet your supervisor

Kezia Lawson

I am friendly, down-to-earth and love to support other Speech and Language Therapists at all stages of their career.

I have worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in a variety of settings including community, inpatient rehabilitation and acute hospitals. I worked in four NHS teams before moving into independent practice in 2021. My most recent NHS role was as Team Lead of a general adult community team. I have supervised many Band 5, 6 and 7 Speech and Language Therapists within these settings, including supporting many newly qualified therapists with dysphagia training and signing off their NQP competencies.

In 2021 I worked as a Visiting Clinical Tutor/Lecturer at City, University of London. This role included a supervisory role to students who were developing their clinical skills.

I have completed a diploma in Transformational Life Coaching with Animas Centre for Coaching. I have completed various supervision courses independently and within the workplace, including relevant modules of a Team Leader Apprenticeship.

I am also committed to receiving regular supervision and coaching myself, which I find has a huge impact on my wellbeing, confidence and sense of direction in my work.

Client reviews

  • I have been working with Kezia for two sessions now and she has made a big difference to my wellbeing both personally and professionally. She excels in reflective listening, and has a gift in her ability to summarise, which helps me to see things more clearly, and to feel properly heard. Her skill in asking just the right question helps me to find the answers myself. As a Speech Therapy supervisor, she is generous with her clinical experience and ideas to help me develop my own. Thank you, Kezia, I feel richer for working with you.

    (Supervision)

  • I first contacted Kezia when I decided to take on some adult clients and I needed some extra supervision. Kezia is a natural teacher whose experience allows her to provide ideas, explanations and examples. I learnt so much during my supervision and Kezia encouraged me to feel empowered and confident to work with my caseload. Her friendly yet professional demeanour means she is so approachable and never made me feel silly when I asked basic questions! I thoroughly recommend her as a supervisor, and I will be using her again in the future.

    (Clinical Supervision)

  • Kezia helped me to make sense of my thoughts and understand the root of what was really holding me back in my business. Thanks to her I was able to change my perception and finally find a way to move forward towards my goal. She has an incredible positive energy, I felt safe and welcome to dig deeper and share my most secluded thoughts. Thank you Kezia.

    (Life Coaching client)

  • Kezia is a fantastic coach who has really helped me move forward after a difficult period in my life. I felt a bit lost and was recommended Kezia by a friend. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to achieve but knew I needed to get a focus back in my life and strike a balance with my job, family and myself. Kezia is friendly and professional and so easy to talk to which really helped me to be honest with myself which in turn enabled her to support me with the tools I needed to help me move forward. I would highly recommend Kezia as a life coach and really look forward to continuing my journey with her..

Who do I work with?

I can provide one-off supervision sessions to work through specific problems. Alternatively, I can offer regular supervision sessions as frequently as you wish.

You may particularly benefit from my coaching style of supervision if:

⭐You are new to independent practice or considering moving away from the NHS into the private field. Career transitions can feel overwhelming. Supervision/coaching can support you to create your ideal role, increase your confidence in selling your services and help you to achieve a healthy balance between life inside and outside of work.

⭐You are an independent SLT with years of clinical experience but feeling more clueless when it comes to business skills. Think of me as your business coach as well as fellow SLT, who understands the challenges posed by this shift in roles!

⭐You have been working in independent practice for a while but feel you are losing motivation or have hit a roadblock. A coaching approach would be particularly helpful in identifying the cause of stagnation, establishing new career goals and action plans to achieve these.

⭐You have recently qualified and finding it difficult to secure your first NQP role. I have interviewed many new Band 5s over the years, including writing interview questions and interview tasks. I have also led lectures and tutorials to university students on the topic of job applications and interview skills. I can provide coaching/mentoring to support you on the path to being offered your dream NQP role!

Check out my blog post!

I’ve learnt from my own experience and from speaking to other Speech and Language Therapists in supervision that it can be a real challenge to run a business and serve our clients whilst looking after ourselves.

I strongly believe that to effectively serve our clients, it’s crucial to take care of ourselves and develop our businesses in a way that fits in with our lives.

I wrote a blog post aiming to provide practical insights from my experiences, which may be particularly beneficial if you’re new to private practice, considering taking the leap into independent work, or experiencing mounting pressure in your independent practice.

I’d love you to check it out and let me know what you think!

What does a coaching style of supervision look like?

I provide a safe, confidential, non-judgemental and reflective space for you to explore your thoughts. I bring curiosity and compassion to our conversations.

Rather than jumping to provide you with answers, I ask questions to open up new ways of thinking and empower you to find solutions that are relevant to you and your work. Where helpful, I can share reflections from my own clinical experience.

I can also offer clinical supervision in the field of acquired adult communication and swallowing disorders.

As a qualified coach, I bring my coaching skills into supervision to empower you to achieve your potential. Coaching can help you to:

👉 Identify an ideal future that is aligned with your values
👉 Make sense of your thoughts, feelings and fears
👉 Break down negative patterns or beliefs that hold you back
👉 Recognise your unique strengths and contributions
👉 Replace unhelpful habits with more positive behaviours
👉 Open up pathways to the changes you genuinely want to see in your life
👉 Empower you to take control of your life/career
👉 Create achievable and practical action plans
👉 Learn and practise strategies to help overcome future obstacles

Coaching helps to bridge the gap from where you are now and where you want to be, through a series of thought-provoking conversations fully centred on you and your goals. If you don’t know where you want to be, coaching can help you to make sense of your situation, find a new perspective and enable you to make informed choices about your future.

Coaching involves powerful questioning that promotes self-exploration and increased self-awareness. This creates much more potential for you unlock new perspectives to enable you to find the answers already within.
